There’s nothing quite like pulling into Ocean City with the windows down and the salt air rushing in. Whether you’re rolling in for a weekend by the beach or settling in for a season of sun and sand, this stretch of Maryland’s Coast has some of the best RV campgrounds in the Mid-Atlantic.
At Top End Performance, we’ve worked with travelers from all over the country who come here for one thing: that mix of small-town charm, oceanfront views, and easy access to adventure. Here are a few of our favorite RV campgrounds around Ocean City, Maryland and some tips to help your setup run smooth once you’re here.
Frontier Town Campground
Family fun, waterpark, and bayside views
Location: West Ocean City, MD
Vibe: Family-friendly, full of energy
This one’s an Ocean City classic. You’ll find water slides, a lazy river, and a western-themed park that’s pure nostalgia. It’s a favorite for families who want it all, scenic coastal marsh and bay views, plenty of amenities, and endless entertainment. Frontier Town also has full hookups, on-site food options, and a marina if you’re bringing your boat.
We’re seasonal campers at Frontier Town ourselves, so we know how it goes. When something breaks, it always seems to happen right in the middle of vacation. That’s why we do a lot of work on-site during the season, helping other campers get back to relaxing instead of troubleshooting.
If you’ve got a repair or upgrade in mind, you can call us before you arrive. We’ll order your parts ahead of time and schedule the work while you’re here.
Pro Tip: Frontier Town gets busy fast in the summer, so booking ahead for mobile service can save you time and stress once you’re parked and plugged in.
Sun Outdoors Ocean City
Bayfront views and a lively social scene
Location: West Ocean City, MD
Vibe: Laid-back, pet-friendly, and social
Sun Outdoors Ocean City, known to many longtime campers as Castaways, sits right on the bay just a few miles from the beach. It’s the kind of place where you can launch a paddleboard in the morning, grab a drink at the tiki bar in the afternoon, and listen to live music as the sun sets. The energy here leans more adult and social, a mix of beach vibes, good company, and that come-as-you-are kind of fun.
Guests also get discounted access to the amenities at Frontier Town, just three miles down the road. That’s where families often go for the waterpark, mini golf, or western village, while Sun Outdoors keeps things a little more relaxed for grown-ups who like a friendly crowd but still want quiet evenings by the bay.
Eagle’s Landing Golf Course is less than a mile away, so if golf is part of your getaway routine, you can’t beat the convenience.
Local Insight: The salty air off the bay is part of what makes this spot special, but it’s tough on RVs. We help a lot of RV campers here with quick checks or small fixes before the season ends, especially for corrosion and seal wear.
Assateague Island State Park & National Seashore
Wild ponies, open beaches, and quiet nights
Location: Assateague Island, MD
Vibe: Wild, quiet, and unforgettable
Assateague is one of those places that reminds you what camping is really about. The barrier island stretches between the bay and the ocean, with wide open beaches, salty breezes, and wild ponies that wander wherever they please. You’ll fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up to hooves in the sand.
There are two sides to camp on. The State Park and the National Seashore. And each offers a different experience. The State Park has hot showers, clean bathhouses, and outdoor sinks for washing dishes. The National Seashore side is more primitive. You won’t find many amenities there, but you’ll get stargazing, quiet mornings, and that rare sense of being completely surrounded by nature.
The ponies here aren’t shy. They know how to open coolers, so keep your food locked up or be prepared for a surprise visit at breakfast.
If you have time to stay longer, check out the camp host program. You can stay for a month with an electric site, work part-time, and soak up the slow rhythm of island life. It’s a great way to experience Assateague beyond a quick weekend trip.
We’ve found it handy to bring a dump caddy, since sites don’t have full hookups, and some loops aren’t generator-friendly. Solar setups work beautifully out here. Most days, though, it’s enough to open the windows and let the coastal air flow through.
Local Insight: Between the sand, salt, and humidity, Assateague can be rough on your RV. A quick maintenance check before your trip; especially seals, slide-outs, and electrical systems, can make all the difference once you’re out there.
Pocomoke River State Park (Shad Landing)
Cypress trees, still waters, and total calm
Location: Snow Hill, MD
Vibe: Peaceful, wooded, and enchanted
If you’re craving something quieter and more shaded than the coastal RV campgrounds, Pocomoke River State Park is a world apart. The drive itself feels like slipping into another landscape, thick stands of cypress trees line the river, and as you paddle by, you can almost hear the forest breathe. It’s calm, peaceful, and deeply connected to nature.
The park’s Shad Landing area has spacious sites under tall pines, kayak rentals, hiking trails, and plenty of wildlife. You’ll trade ocean views for still-water reflections, but it’s every bit as beautiful. It’s the kind of place where mornings start slow, coffee tastes better, and the biggest decision of the day is whether to paddle or hike first.
There’s less bustle here than the beachside campgrounds, which makes it a favorite for anyone who wants to unplug and recharge for a few days.
Local Insight: The forest holds humidity, so it’s smart to check your A/C and ventilation systems before your stay. We often help campers here with simple tune-ups to keep things running smoothly in the shade.
Sun Outdoors Ocean City Gateway (Formerly Fort Whaley)
Affordable comfort just outside the beach traffic
Location: Whaleyville, MD
Vibe: Relaxed, affordable, and family-friendly
Just outside Ocean City, Sun Outdoors Ocean City Gateway offers a laid-back alternative for campers who want to be close to the beach without the crowds. The RV campground is clean, comfortable, and one of the most budget-friendly options near town.
There’s a bus service that takes campers into Ocean City, so you can skip the parking headaches and still spend your day by the water. It’s also a convenient base for exploring Berlin, Snow Hill, Pocomoke, and the Salisbury Zoo, all within an easy drive.
Guests staying here get access to Frontier Town amenities, so families can enjoy the waterpark, mini golf, and western village even if they’re not staying there.
Local Insight: Because Gateway sits inland, it’s less exposed to salt air, but it’s still smart to check seals, roof vents, and batteries before long stays. Preventive maintenance goes a long way in Maryland’s changing seasons.
Keeping Your RV Running Smooth on Maryland’s Coast
After visiting these campgrounds year after year, one thing’s clear, the salt air, sand, and humidity that make this coast beautiful are also tough on your rig. Out here, staying ahead of maintenance isn’t extra. It’s just part of life near the ocean.
Simple things help a lot: rinse off salt spray when you can, check seals and roof lines after long stays, and make sure your A/C, batteries, and electrical systems are ready before the next trip. It doesn’t take much time, but it can save a weekend.
We spend most of the season working in these same campgrounds, keeping RVs and boats ready for the road and water. If something goes wrong while you’re here, you don’t have to move a thing.
Top End Performance provides mobile RV and marine repair throughout Ocean City, Berlin, Assateague, West OC, and Snow Hill. Whether it’s a small leak, an A/C issue, or a pre-trip check, we’ll meet you where you are so you can keep your vacation on track.
Plan Your Trip, Not Your Repairs
Whether you’re setting up for a weekend or the whole season, Maryland’s Coast has something for every kind of camper. And if you need a hand getting road-ready, water-ready, or even want to rent an RV for your next trip, we’re right here in the neighborhood.
